Whether GoodFellas is better than The Godfather will occupy film anoraks ad infinitum (and nauseam). What is certain, however, is that this is The GodfatherΓÇÖs angry, snot-nosed punk of a little brother, and what it lacks in depth it more than makes up for in momentum. The pace at which director Martin Scorsese navigates three decades of mob life in New York, as we follow the rise of Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) from errand boy to trusty confidant, is exhilarating. As are the performances from Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, the unbridled violence of which has been inscribed in the popular imagination: this searing memoir is as brutal and bruising now as it was 14 years ago. So why is it being rereleased? Well, GoodFellas was one of the first DVDs on the market and the quality was substandard, whereas this newly remastered version is as sharp as one of De NiroΓÇÖs suits. The plentiful extras on this two-disc set include commentaries from Scorsese, leading cast members and Henry Hill himself. Plus, there are several documentaries, including a making-of feature and an examination of the GoodFellas legacy ΓÇô chief among which is that without this film there would be no Sopranos. Reason enough why this should be an indispensable part of your collection.]]></body>
